What is Different Drum?

‘Different Drum’ is a different, distinctive and hands-on ‘event’ that gives a chance for people to have a musical (and rhythmic) experience and share the wonder of playing percussive music together. It provides interactive and accessible opportunities based around a structured group-drumming workshop commonly called a drum circle. A drum circle is a powerful technique that can build:

• Teams – bring teams together to share, learn and work through the power of rhythm and timing.
• Creativity – explore creative expression in music to explore a creative expression of thinking outside of the box.
• Discovery – experience the power of achievement and application and performance.

What happens in Different Drum?

A facilitator enables everyone to express themselves through playing hand drums and percussion instruments that are used as tools to create group music and to develop and nurture the group dynamic in a drum circle, a relaxed yet structured environment. A drum circle is a percussion orchestra – creating music there and then, an ever changing, constantly evolving interaction, in which music is created as a direct result of group participation.

Who will facilitate?

Steve Cooper - an experienced musician with over 30 years involvement in music. I have played in Folk, Jazz, Blues and Rock bands, Musicals, Choirs, Marching Bands and Orchestras, playing trumpet and currently play Drums, Guitar and Percussion. I also have 15 years experience working with adults, children and young people in the voluntary and statutory sectors.

Different Drum could be an individually tailored programme such as:

• A short fun icebreaker and energiser at the start of your event with everyone participating as a team.
• A session during your event to refresh and bring some energy to a tough day.
• An end of day (wind-down) session at your event to celebrate achievement.
• A team-building workshop, using drumming and rhythm to inspire, enhance creativity, unite the team to create a positive result.
• A drum circle to celebrate success, relax, release stress and break down barriers e.g. Bring management and staff together to produce a common outcome.
• I would build your event’s aims and objectives into a session by using team-building metaphors with exciting and dynamic music making.

Your event could be a Meeting, Training Day or Workshop.
